AP: Ed Whitacre to Become Permanent CEO of GM

According to the Associated Press, Ed Whitacre, the 68-year old chairman of the GM board of directors and current interim CEO, is going to remove the “interim” part of his CEO job title. When Whitacre removed Fritz Henderson some months ago, he said that the company would search far and wide to find the next CEO to guide the company. Apparently that search is over and it only needed to go as far as a bathroom mirror.

Whitacre, who has said multilpe times that he knows vitrually nothing about cars, was the former CEO of AT&T. He has made a lot of upper management changes at GM recently and most see this as a positive development to get younger, more maverick leaders at the helms of GM divisions to drive new products and sales.

Time will tell if this is the right move. The guy certainly seems to have the stomach and stones for the job. Could we be looking at the new Lee Iacocca? We’ll believe it when the 52 billion dollars GM took from the federal government is paid back.
