Atco Raceway in New Jersey, one of the most notable drag racing plants on the East Coast, turns 50 this season. That’s a hell of an accomplishment for a track that is centrally located to several large population areas like Philly and New York City. Known for awesome traction and big purse bracket racing in recent years, the track has some awesome history.
New England area racers often make the trek south to battle at Atco. They have run a series of foot brake and electronic bracket races which really came to be known as the most lucrative and competitive action to be found in the region. If you leave Atco with the big check and the trophy, you’ve honestly done something special.
The track has lots of history, but in our opinion, the most important moment for the facility was the day it hosted the first Pro Mod race ever held. That would make the official beginning of the door slammer era that we are totally locked into today.
A local newspaper did a nice piece on the track and how it is still going strong. That’s an awesome thing. We always lament the closing of tracks, this time we get to celebrate the life of one.
