AutoTrader Classics Find: An Ultra Rare 1970 428CJ Cougar Eliminator

AutoTrader Classics Find: An Ultra Rare 1970 428CJ Cougar Eliminator

Now that the end is supposedly drawing close for Mercury, we’re getting a little nostalgic for the former “mid-scale” brand in the Ford fold. The Mercury Cougar was, for all intents and purposes, a repackaged Mustang. They were more luxury oriented for the most part, but there were still people out there who wanted their cake and horsepower too.

This kick ass 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator can be rightfully called one of the quickest Mercury examples to ever roll off the factory floor. It was absolutely ordered to be a drag racer with a 428ci Cobra Jet motor, ram air,  3.50 rear end gears, a close ratio four-speed, a Traction-Lock rear end, and a Hurst T-handle shifter.

The interior still has all the class that one would expect from the late 1960s Merc. There’s some “simulated” wood grain on the doors and console, a rally clock on the passenger side, and a wood rimmed steering wheel.

For whomever bought this car, it must have been a hoot to leave the office in the city and lay waste to bunches of stuff on the commute home. That’s stress relief!

This is supposedly one of only 215 Cougar Eliminators that were built with Cobra Jet engines. Consider how many have been wrecked and blown sky high and you’ve got yourself one unique big block bruiser. But $114,995?
