We all make mistakes. The fun part is looking back on some of them and laughing after the fact. Such was the case last night as we were getting dinner with the ECTA peeps here in Wilmington, Ohio and our pal John told us that just that day he had driven off from a gas station with the fuel nozzle still plugged firmly into the gas tank of his car. This wasn’t because he was in a big rush but rather because he had been chatting up a dude who rolled into the station with a classic 1930s Bentley and he had been admiring the car. Still in the afterglow of such an experience, he fired his car up, kicked ‘er into low and drove about 20 feet before he heard the hose coupling release and he made the walk of shame into the station to tell them what happened. With today’s quick release hoses, this isn’t a big deal. Back in the day it was a big time mess.
Working at a gas station in high school, I saw all kinds of awesome stuff happen. People filling diesels up with gas or pumping a few gallons of diesel into a gas powered car before figuring out what was happening, people dumping oil directly into the gas tank of their car (“This is what my dad does with the lawn mower!) and other such incidents too numerous to mention. But I digress, this is about you and your ability to look at the past and laugh.
We want to know if you have done anything dumb at a gas pump and if you haven’t specifically, if you have seen anyone pull a stunt like described above or maybe even worse! Spending time at gas stations is part of the deal and we have all been to thousands of them over the span of our gearhead lives, so we want to know if you or someone at the same station of you has ever pulled a stunt that left you shaking or even holding your head in shame. FESS UP!
