BangShift Question Of The Day: What Is The One Car You Would Own And Not Modify At All?

BangShift Question Of The Day: What Is The One Car You Would Own And Not Modify At All?

We’re not usually ones for advocating keeping anything stock around here but the reality is that lots of us have some cars in our mind that we would like to own and keep as stock pieces. For me, if I was going to have one car that I’d own and never do so much as to turn a nut or bolt in the direction of being modified, it would be a later first generation Corvette and it would look like the one below. In my eyes, this is a car that’s pretty much perfect as it sits and deviating from that doesn’t make it “better” to me. I am pretty sure every gearhead reader out there is thinking of the one car that they’d like to own and not mess with so we want you to spill the beans!

Why a late first generation Corvette? I just like them the best, nothing against the Stingrays and other models, but these late first generation cars were built when the Corvette was starting to become a legit icon and they laid the foundation for what those cars are today.

We’re not saying you’d have to give up your welder, tools, superchargers, nitrous bottles, or slicks, just that  in your sea of modified and worked over cars, you’d have one shining example of complete, stock, unaltered goodness. Your job is to determine what they car would be and tell us.

I honestly can’t think of one. My brother and I used to play a ` what if ‘ game when we were young of what we’d do to cars that would be considered sacreligious to modify, partly because of ` piss off the purists ‘ value but mainly because whatever you think of, there have to be modifications you’d at least contemplate … you mention the 1st gen Corvette and yes, I get that they are nice as is, but crossply tyres? 283 or a blue flame 6? drum brakes? Really? you could do reversible mods such as wheels etc to make it enjoyable to drive…Aussie Falcon GT’s come to mind as a car over here that you’d think shouldn’t get modded – I mean, some of them fetch up to a million dollars but hey you can still put bolt on stuff on em that can be returned to stock. So that’s the useability / value type reasons, which frankly I think miss the point a bit. As for ` I wouldn’t modify because its perfect from the factory logic I can’t think of any… maybe a Veyron in a pinch but the hoon in me would love to cut that ugly ol body off and replace it with I dunno and old Falcon or something body….

I was thinking prewar coach built car myself. A Duesenberg or one of the various French art deco cars, or although it’s not coach built, a Cord 810. Something that is better appreciated for its historical and artistic significance than for brute speed.

Lots of good choices listed here. I would only add a 442 from mid-60’s. And a 1963 Plymouth Fury, 426 either Max Wedge or Hemi.

    Not modify at all…

Probably would be an actual 1983 Buick Riviera Indy Pace Car, not a replica but the real deal with the twin turbo EFI 4.1L V6.

In terms of a real car sold by dealers vs. given away… 1981 Buick Regal Indy Pace Car replica, I’d still be awefully tempted to modify it with either a year correct Buick 350 or Before Black carbed turbo system.

Depends. Is this a daily driver or a garage queen that only sees daylight five times a year?

For a DD, forget any older car. Every single one of them needs tunes, and I think for this exercise “hidden” mods do not count. Tire/wheel/brake/suspension/electrical upgrades are also forbidden. Bone stock is cool at shows but sucks when you are putting 20,000 miles per year on your rod.

Garage queens — aaah, now we can fantasize. I have seen exactly one unmolested Hemi Dart in my lifetime. I lust after it and would sleep next to it so I could smell it in my dreams.

Shelby AC Cobra, and Shelby Cobra Daytona. If I want to mod there are too many kits and repros to mess with.

An original Thunderbolt, easily the quickest production car of the ’60’s (Ford actually built 100 of them, and most are still out there). They ran low 11’s when the 409 Chevys were struggling in the 12’s. On today’s tires they’d run high 10’s.
Then again, wouldn’t it be cool to drop a 511″ aluminum block in there!?!
So……. I guess, there are none.

    1957 Plymouth Fury
    Daytona/Superbirds
any number of old pick em’ up trucks…some were just too cool to eff with.

1989 GTA turbo trans am INDY pace car
it is perfect just the way it came, tho. I’d wish they offered it with the notchback hatch, but I’d not add it to it..

I don’t care for super rare cars with performance and looks you can duplicate for fractions of the cost. If it doesn’t have boost, it needs it. If it had boost from the factory it could always use more. My answer is none. Absolutely none. Can’t do it.

The last “vette” I sold was an all original 62′ like the one pictured. But, It was white with red interior, fuely, with power convertible top. My favorite, however, is 58-60 “baby-butt” vettes!!!

    T-Bolt
    427 Cobra
    68 Hemi Dart
    66 427 Fairlane
    69 AMC Super Stocker
    69 A-12 Road Runner
    No particular Order
