Are Big Rig Wheels, Or Any Big Wheel, Cool On A Dually?

Are Big Rig Wheels, Or Any Big Wheel, Cool On A Dually?

Today’s BANGshift Question of the Day is all about wheels. Big wheels to be precise. Now we’ll be the first to say that we are not about the giant wheels on cars, or even giant wheels on most trucks. We define giant as 24 or bigger FYI, although we also don’t like anything bigger than a 20 inch wheel on most trucks, and especially on cars. With that said, the new trend of putting Big Rig wheels on a crew cab dually has us excited. On some stock height trucks you can do this while using actual big rig tires, but on lowered trucks and others you have to actually do some machine work to shave the wheels down for a standard 22 inch tire.

It’s a fairly simple machining operation for a machine shop with a big enough lathe, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. Or, you can order your wheels from several companies who do the machining for you and/or have different styles of wheels available.

One company that is making their own wheels, in 10 lug 22 inch sizes with lots more style that the standard Alcoa or Accuride, plus all kinds of other sizes from 19.5 on up, is American Force Wheels.

Their wheels are available in 8 lug as well, and are designed to give your truck an entirely different look with larger wheels. These are the choice for those of you looking for aggressive styling, big sizes, and a variety of widths for your lowered or massively lifted HD truck.

Another option is the Townasty setup from Tennessee Wheel and Tire. They machine forged aluminum wheels so that you can run 22 or 24 inch tires on the 10 lug big rig wheels and also machine them for a different style on a one off custom basis. They sell packages with wheels, adapters, lugs, etc, or can also include tires.

Because of the machining required, steel 22.5 wheels are not a good choice, although you’ll see some on a truck in our sample photos below. Getting a 22 inch tire stretched over them is not smart, according to what we’ve read online, but man they look great. We don’t know if there are other options available, but we have to say that we’re going to be calling some wheel companies to see what they can do to help us out on our dream of 22 inch steel big rig wheels for our new crew cab dually project.

Make no mistake, this isn’t a cheap way to go, but it might be the ultimate look for a dually. Or is it? What do you guys and gals out there think?

Here are a few duallies on 22.5 or milled 22 inch wheels for you to check out and decide if you like.

All of the wheels pictured look like crap.

Big wheels are for Donks. Grow up and run some wheels that are sane.

I don’t mind lowered trucks that are half tons . Lowering a one ton which is as big a truck as most of us will ever get justy seems stupid . The main attraction is the fact that its a big truck . No you shouldn’t lower it . And no you shouldn’t lower it and then try to put big rig wheels on it . It just looks wrong . Now , if you want to put big rig wheels on it and big rig tires on it, possibly lift it a little welcome back to this side of sanity .

Adding big wheels tells me the owner 1, doesn’t really want to drive it. 2, just vain. 3, has poor taste.

I don’t know why big wheels mean you can’t drive it, only because I know lots of guys with 19.5 to 22.5 wheels on their duallys who drive them weekly if not daily.

I think you should do what you like ultimately.

It really doesn\’t matter if it is \”cool\” or \”not cool\”. If the owner likes the look, makes the build and drives – it then it fits in the \”cool\” category in my books.

I don’t get what all these people are thinking, these look AMAZING and they really aren’t dangerous. I’m sorry you’re all too old to appreciate these, but it’s hard to beat them on a dually.

Oh, and to the people that think they only look good on lifted trucks, I don’t think you looked at that square body Chevy.
