Question Of The Day: What Car Would You Send Into Space?

Question Of The Day: What Car Would You Send Into Space?

There is now a human-made vehicle in space that is in an elliptical orbit around the sun. And it’s in the shape of a first-generation Tesla Roadster. It’s not the Moon landing or a spacewalk, but it’s still a pretty significant point in history that the Falcon Heavy launch went as successfully as it did and how strongly the visuals of the Tesla floating along in it’s parking orbit around Earth captured imaginations around the world. Whether it gave kids hope for interstellar travel, a curiosity on how the rockets worked, or simply got them to dream about being the Starman dummy strapped in behind the wheel of the Roadster as the big blue marble we call home sat in prominent view of the hood, SpaceX’s contributions to space exploration this week qualifies as one of the most impactful events to have occurred yet.

But a Tesla Roadster? Ok, I get it…it’s Elon Musk’s own company, his personal car from his OTHER company, his dream, et cetera. There are problems with sending up a carbon-fiber bodied car, like radiation, micro-meteorites pummeling the hell out of the body structure, and eventually the breakdown of any carbon-based material. Eventually, the metal frame and any glass that hasn’t been shattered by a wayward celestial missile will be all that’s left of the little red Roadster.

So for today’s question, we want to know: if you were allowed to pick one vehicle to use as a ballast weight for the next Falcon Heavy vehicle, what would you send into space? Keep in mind: you aren’t just sending up random garbage, so sending a 1979 VW Rabbit with “Don’t Probe Me, Bro” etched into the hood probably isn’t a good idea. It would have to be a car that the world over knows about, a car that captured frugality, youthfulness, sport, sensible ideas and the spirit of humanity in one go. Any ideas?

(Thanks to Shawn Anderson for the suggestion!)

Not that I hate ever electric car but if I could at least get one prius up to 2000 feet before it came back down at 120 mph , it would be a good day .

    well,if you’re going to send a ford,then a starliner,of course—–gm,then an astro–mopar,satellite—amc,a gremlin,because who doesn’t want to see a space gremlin?

If I remember correctly, We the U.S. Taxpayers subsidize Elon Musk’s Tesla automobile production.
He’s just showing U.S. how he spends our money!

You guys think too near by. Let’s go the distance with a Ford Galaxie. Might even knock an asteroid off a earth collision course. Or a Pinto which comes with it’s own flaming rocket engine! No go on a Mustang, they always go off course.
