Question Of The Day: Is This G-body Monte Carlo SS Worth Nearly $13K?

Question Of The Day: Is This G-body Monte Carlo SS Worth Nearly $13K?

Nutting isn’t the only G-body freak here at BangShift…the first car I got to drive around in public…legally, anyways…that was my own was a T-top equipped 1987 Monte Carlo SS. I’ve got a soft spot for them as well, so when this Craigslist ad surfaced claiming a clean, 60K mile 1987, you bet your ass I opened it. And I might have regretted that decision.

Here’s the good: The car looks really straight, the stripes look good, the nose cone looks good, the interior is very nice, and it’s solid enough that I believe the 60K mile claim. Painted burgundy with the correct 1987 stripe package in red, with the roast-in-the-summer burgundy interior and floor shift auto, it’s everything I want it to be. Just get rid of the “SS” where the front plate should be and I’ll be happy.

Now, for everything that isn’t. I’m not a fan of Cragar S/S wheels on anything made after 1977, and surely not on this ride. I’d trade those out for the 17″ version of the stock “N90” wheel that YearOne sells. The aftermarket cowl hood isn’t my flavor personally, but it isn’t obnoxious, either. That steering wheel would be gone, replaced by a factory wheel. And then there are the side pipes. Of all of the things I’d change on this car, easily item #1 on the list would be the side pipes. Yikes.

Well, maybe there’s one other thing I would change: the price. I know these Montes are gaining in value, and finding one that’s got decently low mileage and a clean body is a hard find. But with all of the work that this car needs to be acceptable, there’s no way I’m forking over $13K.

What about you? Would you spend the money and just clean it up or would you keep looking?

I agree with you Bryan. It’s a nice car. But, why on earth would someone take an 80’s car and put disco-era crap on it? Cragars, hoodpins, hoodstripes, AND sidepipes?? I’m su

I agree with you Bryan, lose the sidepipes, steering wheel, and the Cragar S/S rims, and this Monte Carlo would be a good looking car.

Do we really need close-ups of all four wheels? How about a shot of the engine compartment so we know you didn’t monkey-phuk the hell out of this thing.

I have a 58000 mile 1978 lemans. Drag stars and 2 in lowering springs on rear and front plus dropped spindles. Looks as good as this car. No rust whatsoever.

Yeah, this guy must have it confused for a Buick Grand National. Of course if I seen one like this I would have words with the owner.

Its at a stealership, would you expect anything else!

Did they put big block springs in them! Looks like its ready for rock crawling!

If anyone spends that kind of money on the SS, would be spending another couple of grands to make it right.

Im with you on all counts here. Its not to late to be corrected. Id go with the advice of the guy with the Lemans above. Its amazing but I still see at least a few of these a week around the highways of lower NY. That car should sell for no more than 8 or 9 g’s

CRUSH IT AND DO THE WORLD A FAVOR AND DONT FORGET TO LEAVE THE OWNER OF THAT P.O.S. IN WHEN YOU CRUSH IT. thanks and have a great day.

It’s about 12,500 overpriced. Wasn’t a fan of these cookie cutter cars when they came out, not a fan now, either. Having said that at least this example looks fairly straight and the bolts ons can be easily removed.

I bought a new el Camino in 86 with the same interior, and a 305. Wish I still had it. Yeah side pipes gotta go. Oh I paid 11k when new for the elky
