Test Your Gearhead Knowledge: The Answer To Yesterday’s Quiz!

So yesterday I showed you nothing but a short block and a couple of pistons and asked you to identify the engine, tell me who built it, and then tell me what it was installed in, and what the compression ratio was. I asked you to do the impossible and a couple of you actually came within a whisker of doing it perfectly. I was reading the responses to the story yesterday and a couple of them had my eyes bugging out they were so close. But alas, no one was dead nuts on.

So for those of you who said that this was a 427 Ford FE engine….you were right.

For those of you you said that it had medium riser heads on it…..you were right.

For those of you who said that it was built by Holman and Moody….you were right.

For those of you that said (by looking at the pistons) that it had 12:1 compression….you were right

The one thing that no one got was the original vehicle it was installed in. This was a marine engine that powers a vintage Donzi boat of about 20′ in length according to Dana at Custom Auto Machine.

So that’s the answer to the mystery! Stay tuned, I plan on rolling out another group of these challenges as they’re fun for you and me!

If you are an engine builder or machine shop guy and want to participate, send photos of odd or unique engines to brian@bangshift.com

  1. AZ427FE

If you had posted those photos on the fordfe.com forum they would have told you all that plus the name of the guy who machined the block at the factory.
