Test Your Gearhead Knowledge: The Answer You’re Waiting For and Today’s Challenge!

It has been more than a week since our last Test Your Gearhead Knowledge item, so first off we need to apologize for that. We set this series aside for our SEMA coverage but now that we’re home, it is time to get back  into the groove of showing you a random photo of an engine, component, or other scenario and seeing if you can fill in the blanks. This little meme has become so popular we’ve been getting smashed with photos from machine shops around the country and the world!

The answer to the last question, which was provided by Aussie BS reader Darryl was correctly guessed by a couple of readers. That block was a Holden 308ci V8. The 308 was a long running piece down under, ultimately replaced by the GM LS series in 1999. It had been around since the late 1960s in a variety of Holden models, often times appearing on the option sheet next to the venerable 350. We’re guessing that half of them now have giant roots blowers bolted to them because the boys down under seem to roll that way!

Now for today’s challenge – This one comes from Gino Ofria at the well known Valley Head Service in Northridge, California. In business since the mid 1960s, the VHS name and logo have appeared on hundreds of hot street cars and race cars over the years. One of those shops whose name jumps off the pages of the history books and they are still going strong! Scour the photo and tell us what this is!
