The Silver State Classic Challenge is a bad ass automotive competition that you’ve had to have been living under a rock not to have heard of. It takes place on a 90 mile stretch of desolate Nevada highway 318. The object is simple, select a target speed for your vehicle and drive it, for the length of the course. The cars closest to their target speed are the winners. The exception is the Unlimited class, where haul ass is the only rule.
This event brings all kinds of stuff out of the woodwork. One of the most famous competitors, the “Big Red” Camaro of RJ Gottlieb is ensconced in hot rodding history now. Forum member and hard core BangShifter Randal Burns (known as TheSilverBuick on the forums) lives in the starting point of the race, which is Ely, Nevada. He positioned himself 2.8 miles from the starting line, giving the competitors plenty of run up time and set up shop on the side of the road.
He shared the following full tilt boogie fly by videos from his spot on the course. There’s 13 of them in total and they range from a late model Charger squeaking past at about 100 mph all the way up to the wild road race prepped 1937 Ford F1 truck that was featured in Hot Rod Magazine a while back. That mother was certified for 180mph. He also shot some photos which you can see here.
