We often cite NASCAR as the root of all racing evil. With its massive budgets, corporate-driven agenda, and media domination, it’s an easy target to draw the ire of us busted-knuckle types.
The one thing that does tend to get lost in the shuffle is the level of talent that the drivers of these cars possess and the fact that they are actually real people, not automatons.
The book NASCAR Racers by Ben White is a collection of pocket racing bios that encompass every era of NASCAR’s history from its moonshining beginnings all the way to the most recent champions and stars of today. Admittedly we dove into the history section and were pleasantly surprised to learn some stuff, like the fact that Mario Andretti only has one career NASCAR win.
If you are a current fan of the sport, you’ll like the large section devoted to the racers of today and even the upcoming stars of tomorrow. Books like this are interesting because they really encapsulate a singular moment in time and several years from now you can pick it up and see just how well the careers of the men featured in this book panned out.
This is not the book you want to grab if you want to learn the history of NASCAR. If you are a current fan looking to learn more about the men who’s shoulders the sport is built on this is a great place to start as the pocket bios will surely get your in research mode to learn more.
We recommend this book to the guy who likes flipping on the tube each Sunday or hitting a couple of NASCAR races each season.
This book is available at most online book sellers like amazon.com and can also be had directly from motorbooks at www.motorbooks.com
