We recently finished reading Pontiac: The Performance Years by Martyn Schorr. This book is a collection of stories and articles that highlight the golden age of Poncho performance, roughly 1959-1974. There’s also some 1980s material in the book as well. Pontiac’s story of transformation from a stodgy old brand that even the elderly thought was boring, into the hottest lineup of cars in the domestic performance world is awesome to follow.
From Pontiac’s concept cars, engines that never made production, factory racing efforts, scrapped projects and great tech articles on both restoration and tuning tips, this book is a great reference material for the Pontiac fan that is always looking to learn more.
Pontiac’s story really arcs over the whole muscle car era and as you read the book, it is easy to follow the rise and ultimate decline of the “supercar”. The book provides great tech info on stuff like the Super Duty 455 engines, factory optional equipment of the era, and none of the Pontiac models are neglected.
We enjoyed reading this book and the various pieces between the covers. We’re Pontiac guys at heart as the first muscle car we can remember was our dad’s 1964 GTO and we’ll own a Carousel Red Judge before we kick the bucket. If you dig muscle car history, have a penchant for Pontiacs, or just love looking at vintage photos of muscle cars, buy this book!
