British Virgin Islands Government Considers Building a Drag Strip to Encourage Tourism

Drag racing has been on a global tear over the last few years. With the major infusion of cash from the middle east and the recent announcement of the NHRA Worldwide Network, this international expansion seems to have some momentum. Drag racing in the Caribbean has been popular and hard core for many years with tracks on islands like Aruba, Puerto Rico, and others. The British Virgin Islands are now considering the construction of a drag strip to aid tourism. Our take? Build it and we will come!

According to a story on BVINews.com, the Minister for Education and Culture Andrew Fahie suggested that the government consider a drag strip to draw visitors to the islands. Fahie sees drag racing as a viable option for the island because of its widespread popularity among residents in the Caribbean and the US (their primary source of visitors apparently).

There were some questions apparently raised about the safety of the sport and Fahie had an amazingly awesome answer. He said, “it is an entrepreneurial sport that is not sold properly to the public.” BINGO!

We think it would be neat to see a new, modern, strip built in the British Virgin Islands. Racers from the Caribbean often ship their cars to the main land and run match races and compete during the racing season. Noted American and Canadian racers have made the trip the opposite way as well.

Get it built and we’ll be there to cover the first race!
