The British Virgin Islands (BVI) government recently hired New Direction Consultancy to conduct a feasibility study on whether or not the BVI should have a drag strip. That company has contacted the NHRA and they responded by sending over Ray Wilkinson, the general manager of the NHRA owner Atlanta Dragway. The project certainly has opponents and one need look no farther than the people commenting on the story to find them.
It would certainly be a neat destination to race at and other islands, like Puerto Rico and Aruba, have tracks that are supported by the local population. Both the Aruba and Puerto Rico tracks have been known to run match races featuring racers from the main land. The four-banger Pro Mods from Puerto Rico are on par with any wild doorslammer you’ll find anywhere on Earth.
The near $100,000, 6-month contract with the consulting firm will cover all the costs of their study. The island wants to use the track as a tool for tourism and also as a tool for interaction with other Caribbean countries that have racing. The winter island circuit certainly has a nice ring to it!
Being that this is a government project, it surely will be controversial, just for the fact that residents tax money will be funding it if construction moves ahead. We’ll follow any developments with the project.
Oh, we’ll also vow to be at the track the first day it opens, assuming it makes it that far. We love taking on the tough assignments!
