BangShift Daily Tune Up: Hot Rod Lincoln – Commander Cody And His Lost Planet Airmen – (1971)

A bunch of different bands and artists have covered the song Hot Rod Lincoln over the year but my all time favorite is the version of the tune by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen that was released in 1971 and climbed up the charts in 1972. The song tells the tale of a kid in a hopped up Model A with a Lincoln motor, overdrive transmission, and a heavy right foot. With band noodling a plucky guitar riff in the background, lead singer George Frayne handles the vocals and those vocals are filled with awesome automotive action like, “…with a four barrel carb and the dual exhaust, with 4.11 gears you can really get lost.” That’s pretty much the tip of the iceberg.

Will the Lincoln powered Ford run down a Caddy? Will the kid’s pappy really get driven to drink by the way the kid is operating the car? Will telephone poles look like a picket fence? Listen below to find out the answers to all these pressing questions!
