BangShift Daily Tune Up: I Want To Be Your Driver – Chuck Berry (1965-ish)

BangShift Daily Tune Up: I Want To Be Your Driver – Chuck Berry (1965-ish)

Chuck Berry has a ton of great songs centered around cars in his canon of music. From “Ridin’ Around In My Automobile” to that wild chick “Maybellene” he knew how to jam about cars. Hey, those two would have been easy for us to pick and slam up and run as part of our daily BangShift Daily Tune Up but we went another way and picked his lesser known song, “I want to be your driver”.  This song isn’t exactly about a car and the driving…well Chuck got himself into a little trouble due to his penchant to driving stuff he shouldn’t have back in the early 1960s.

We’re thinking that this tune was pretty risque for the time  period that it was released in. While the best we can find it that it came out in the middle 1960s, we’re thinking that it actually could have been part of Berry’s releases in the late 1950s. If you’re a music buff that knows this stuff, set us straight!

This is a rocking tune with Berry’s signature guitar sounds as well as lyrics that are some of the thinnest veiled double entendre in rock and roll history, “I’ve never had the thrill of drivin’…such a wonderful machine.” This song ain’t about a Cadillac, kids.

Press play below to hear Chuck Berry jam out his lesser known classic, “I want to be your driver”!
