BangShift Daily Tune Up: “Ignition” Brian Setzer ’68 Comeback Special (2001)

BangShift Daily Tune Up: “Ignition” Brian Setzer ’68 Comeback Special (2001)

Brian Setzer is a bad ass. He always has been whether as the front man for the Stray Cats, Brian Setzer Orchestra, or on his own. The Brian Setzer ’68 Comeback Special along with Bernie Dresel on drums, and Mark Winchester on slap bass, is a trio with a pure and clean rockabilly sound. They released this album in 2001 with a slew of hot rod friendly songs. We dig this one because…well the title says it all.

Brian Setzer’s success has most often come while playing music that somehow doesn’t fit in, while convincing people it should. From his earliest days in the Tom Cats who, after selling all their instruments to buy plain tickets, ended up in Europe where punk rock ruled and called them self the Stray Cats and played rock and roll/rockabilly. After that he brought back swing with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and all along has never apologized for playing the music that spoke to him. Kinda sounds like a hot rodder don’t you think?

After all, we would be driving a Prius or Accord while listening to the easy listening version of “Hell’s Bells” if we didn’t march to the beat of the hot rod drummer.

Click play to listen and enjoy.

Brian Setzer, definitely bang shift approved. One of the best guitar players of all time. I believe that’s a 59 Gretch.

Awesome song, awesome album. There’s another great tune on that record called “Who would love this car but me” bout a beat up old 55 Caddy, it’s worth a listen

My daughter swiped my Stray Cats cassette when she was little and played it ’til it broke. I’ve got a few of his CD’s, ain’t found a bad one yet.
