By the time most of you read this, I’ll be steaming west on a plane to hook up with Chad and then drive to the fabled Bonneville salt flats for our coverage of Speed Week. The funny part of this whole thing is that I got back to my house late yesterday afternoon from an adventure to the Larson Race Cars Shop operated by five time Hot Rod Drag Week champ Larry Larson in Missouri. More details on that next week. During my 12 hour layover at the palatial Lohnes manse, I was able to wash some clothes, horse around with the kids, and pack a larger suitcase for the longer trip to Bonneville. It is my first visit to the salt but my second trip to Utah…technically I stood in the corner of the state on a family vacation as a kid.
One of the things I greatly enjoy about what we do at BangShift is traveling around. Chad and I have been fortunate over the years to see lots of this country while doing car stuff. From road trips to drag strips, we have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the different cultures and people that make up our awesome country. I think this adventure to Bonneville has me more excited than anything I have done to this point. I truly didn’t sleep a wink last night just thinking about the whole week that is coming. I doubly excited to work with Chad in bringing you great news and coverage from the event. We promise to bring our fastball from the salt. You just stay tuned and watch.
As for this tune, I like it. My kids like singing it and trying to wade their way through all the city and place names that Cash strings together. My wife always sings it to me as I trundle out the door with my luggage. It is practically a family standard. I have always counted mobility as one of our greatest freedoms. In a childlike way, I’ll forever marvel at the fact that I can wake up before dawn in the shadow of the Altantic Ocean and be on a Paficic beach long before sunset. I’m a simpleton, but I’m not ashamed of that fact!
