BangShift Daily Tune Up: KISS – Detroit Rock City (1976)

Is Detroit Rock City about cars? Not really, but Detroit is the ancestral home for just about every hot rodder who loves old American iron so that’s why we’re throwing some KISS up in your face today. This song wasn’t super popular when it first came out but over the year it has morphed into an anthem of sorts and the tune always finds itself on lists of the “most important” rock/metal songs of its era. It is rocking ode that was originally written about the true story of a fan who died in a car wreck on the way to a KISS show. We weren’t aware of that until looking into the background of the song.

For whatever reason, this particular video shows some classic footage of a powerboat absolutely hauling ass on the water, around Detroit we assume. The opening of the song and the guitar riffs in it are awesome and totally worthy of foot to the floor acceleration runs and gear banging fun with the radio cranked up.
