Recently the Canadian band Rush got an honor many people felt was long over due. The group was chosen to be added to the already amazing docket at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rush is one of those bands that seem to split people right down the middle. Their songs often cover subject matter in an interesting (if not sometimes weird) way, their lead singer Geddy Lee has a “love it or hate it” voice, and their fan base is as passionate (fanatical?) as any you’ll find no matter the genre of music. BangShifter 1BadMonkey suggested the band’s car song Red Barchetta as BS Daily Tune up selection because of their recent hall of fame news and we thought that was a good idea.
This song (like so many of Rush’s) is set in the future at a time when the government has passed the “Motor Law” essentially taking all cool cars off the road and forcing people to drive what amount to motorized safety pods. If that doesn’t sound like something that could happen down the road, think about Challengers that weight 4,200lbs and get back to us. Anyway, the narrator of the tune sings about sneaking off to his uncle’s farm in the countryside and sneaking out for a drive in his perfectly kept “Red Barchetta” sports car. As much as the dystopian future the song has sucks, we can totally appreciate the feelings relayed through the song about ripping around on country roads with just the sunlight and burbling engine providing the background environment.
If there is one thing that Rush fans and haters can agree on it is that this is one of the most musically and instrumentally talented rock bands ever. Neil Peart, Rush’s drummer is recognized as one of the (or according to Rush fans) the best rock drummers every to hammer the skins. His work is on display in this tune as is the rest of the band’s!
Chad Note: I’m one of the half of the people who think Rush sucks. We are the correct half by the way. It actually pains me to allow this blog item to go live because in my mind I was hoping that we would never ever have a Rush song on Daily Tune Up. To give all the Rush nut jobs yet another person to hate besides me, blame Rush fanatic Scotty Holmes for my Rush disdain. Scotty, like most Rush fans I’ve had to speak with, went on incessantly during our first years of college about how great Rush was. Every single song heard was for some reason compared to Rush and I was brow beaten about how great they were and that everyone else sucked. So blame him. I don’t like Rush, and will only listen to a couple of their songs if people are around who obviously like them. Carry on… BSC

YUCK!!! I hate Rush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Long haired freaky people….
Not a big Rush fan either, imagine that.
Here’s an interesting bit of trivia on that song: The inspiration came from a bit of fiction called “A Nice Morning Drive,” originally published in Road & Track. Whether you’re a fan of Rush (as I am) or not, it’s an interesting read.
I’ve never intentionally listened to Rush before. I’m sure I’ve heard them on the radio though. I though it was ok, but nothing to really grab me though.
Being a musician, I like the technical precision that Rush presents. Overall, I’ve enjoyed most of their music in spite of the crazy high vocals.
Maybe it’s not everyone’s musical taste but this is automotive poetry: “Well weathered leather, hot metal and oil, the scented country air; sunlight on chrome, the blur of the landscape, every nerve aware…..”
Agreed! There are a lot of great lyrics in this song!
“Wind In my hair-
Shifting and drifting-
Mechanical music-
Adrenaline surge…”
If you’re not feeling these lyrics everytime you get behind the wheel of your machine, you’re doing it wrong!
^^^^^^This^^^^^
you can hate Rush but this is a drivers song.
The Pass Road that runs just south of the 118 between Conoga Park and Simi Valley,Ca. can be run in the time of this song. Hit that road,or Malholand HWY off Kanan or just about any road in the Santa Monica Mtns and tell me how this song sucks….
Cool!!
