BangShift Daily Tune Up: The Amazing Royal Crowns – 1965 GTO (1997)

By the end of the day today Chad and I will be at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, California setting up our scaffolding and getting our gear ready for the live broadcast of the 2013 March Meet. I chose The Amazing Royal Crowns rollicking ode to a 1965 GTO today for a couple reasons. First, the video of this tune begins with a scene from Two Lane Blacktop where Warren Oates’ character picks up a hitchhiker in a GTO (not a ’65 obviously) and tells him that he bought the car in Bakersfield. Secondly, Don Garlits (among others) is referenced in the tune and Garlits racked up his fair share of March Meet wins over the years. This is a rocking rockabilly song that’ll have you tapping your feet, bobbing your head and then yelling 1-9-6-5 GTO as the band does at the end of the tune. These guys got their start in the Boston scene during the late 1990s and I saw them play several times back then. They won a big yearly radio station battle of the bands deal and toured the county for many years. This is my favorite song out of their list of rocking jams.

WE’LL SEE YOU IN BAKERSFIELD TOMORROW! UNTIL THEN, ROCK OUT WITH THE AMAZING ROAYL CROWNS AND THEIR SONG 1965 GTO!
