BangShift Tune-Up: “Leave Out All The Rest” By Linkin Park (2008)

BangShift Tune-Up: “Leave Out All The Rest” By Linkin Park (2008)

As intertwined as music is to the lifestyle that we enjoy, whenever a staple musician leaves this earth, the feeling becomes more than just “another one gone”. Your mind goes back to every song of theirs you knew, and the times and places that correlate to the music itself. Your memories tie in to the music as well. Kenney Chesney’s song “I Go Back” explains this very well: “We all have a song that somehow stamped our lives/Takes us to another place and time…” The truth is, there’s a track list in your memory of the music and what it means to you comes flying back whenever you hear those familiar notes and words.

Linkin Park has been in the background of every event I’ve dealt with since the days when I’d blast their breakthrough album “Hybrid Theory” while hauling tail to the Manitou Springs Domino’s for my shift. Whether it was me and a couple of friends screaming out the chorus to “One Step Closer” while roaming around Colorado Springs, to songs like “Faint” and “Breaking the Habit” during my first deployment, and on and on, and so forth and so forth. If I needed to amp up or was ready to set the world on fire, “Given Up” was there. If I needed a throwback, I’d blast “Points of Authority”. But while the fast and hard stuff was cool, I often played the slower, quieter music whenever I had enough of the day and would just go drive to try and settle things out in my head.

As I reviewed which track I was going to use for today, I went through a lot of Linkin Park’s catalog, and in reading lyrics and listening to songs, it almost seems like Chester Bennington was predicting his future. The man had plenty of demons to tap into for inspiration for music, but knowing how his story has ended, the words are haunting and prophetic. This song often spoke to me when I was at my lowest, telling me to look past my failings to see that there was plenty to be proud of…or, at least, that’s how I heard the words as I would cruise at two in the morning through the city.

May you find the peace that eluded you, Chester, and thank you for the music you have left behind.
