BangShift Tune-Up: “Replaceable” By CKY (2017)

BangShift Tune-Up: “Replaceable” By CKY (2017)

Here’s the story behind this one: normally, I blast a wide array of rock music wherever I go that generally spans the mid-1970s to current. I’ve got a pretty broad taste in music, courtesy of having young parents who raised me on Boston, Van Halen, AC/DC and ZZ Top, time spent near Seattle during the peak of the grunge music scene, and the general impressions that songs you like leave on you. I might be blowing smoke saying this, but I believe certain songs inspire certain feelings and imagery inside of your head when you hear them. I can’t hear Van Halen’s “Dreams” without picturing A-4 Skyhawks in Blue Angels livery tearing the sky a new one, for example…that kind of imprint. Cars, music…it all goes hand in hand in a way that defies explanation. Roadtrips require one set of music, racing another, et cetera.

Hearing the thumping basslines of “Replaceable” by CKY earlier today painted a pleasantly dirtier picture today. Slot mags. White-letter tires. Hi-Jackers and slapper bars. Glasspacks and attitude for miles, fueled by cheap musclecars, plentiful gas, and all of the darker sides of this deal we all enjoy. CKY has been around since 1998, back when they were known as Camp Kill Yourself, and yes, they are tied in with the Jackass franchise…drummer Jess Margera is the brother of Jackass member Bam. But this song reaches back in time…you might disagree, but I get flavors of ZZ Top and T-Rex and Clutch, none of which are bad bands to take cues from. Open up the ’70s Street Machines Tumblr page, hit play on the link below, and you’ll see what I mean…
