BangShift Tune-Up: “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, Live At Castle Donington (1991)

BangShift Tune-Up: “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, Live At Castle Donington (1991)

At the age of 64, Malcolm Young, the rhythm guitarist for AC/DC, has passed on. The older of the two Young brothers that were the root of the band (Angus, the lead guitarist, being the other), Malcolm had been instrumental in helping create the force that the band became. AC/DC is one of those bands where everybody knows who they are. Even the most unlikely individual will be able to tell you they’re a rock band, and many will know at least one or two of their songs. Many will know a ton…the appeal of the work that the brothers Young and their merry band put together is intertwined in the rock community. The songs were catchy, powerful, motivating and sounded absolutely bitching when pushed through the sound system, whether it was hearing “T.N.T” through a Craig deck and Jensens in a Camaro, spinning wrenches in the shop late one evening as “Ride On” plays out of an old radio, or beating the steering wheel into submission and singing along every time “Money Talks” comes on over the radio.

Malcolm co-wrote songs (every one through the Rock or Bust album), sang backup, and generally was restrained compared to Angus’s wild-ass schoolboy persona. He might have been overlooked, but he was integral to the success of AC/DC, was a damn good player, and is responsible for generations of people enjoying hard rock music. And that’s why we choose this particular video to share with you. We were never going to pick one AC/DC song everyone can agree on 100%. But we can all agree that “Thunderstruck” is one of their most well-known. That isn’t what we want you to pay attention to. Look at the size of that crowd. Look at the motion, the involvement. That’s nearly 100,000 people, fist-pumping, headbanging, and moving to the noise. That’s all kinds of people, all fans of an Australian hard-rock band, moving as one. It’s beautiful.

Rest easy, Malcolm, and our condolences to the band and the families.

AC/DC caused my tinnitus, it hasn’t been quiet in my ears since 1982. Too close to a cannon during For Those About To Rock, Rosemont Horizon. It was worth it.
