BangShift Tune-Up: “Hot Rod Honeymoon” by Jeff Beck (2003)

BangShift Tune-Up: “Hot Rod Honeymoon” by Jeff Beck (2003)

This one is purely a guilty pleasure, so if you don’t like the song, you can at least enjoy the mid-1960s footage of drag racing. I grew up playing racing games, from Rad Racer on the Nintendo through today, when I play Forza Horizon whenever I get a chance. Gran Turismo 4 was one that I owned during my military days…in lieu of heading out of the barracks and spending tons of money I didn’t need to spend, instead I sat in my room and played the hell out GT4 to my heart’s content, and one of the songs in rotation that you could cue up was this funky number. What little I do know about Jeff Beck involves two things: guitars and Ford hot rods. His guitar work has been earning Beck his pay since the 1960s and he is often cited as an influence. He can rip a guitar to pieces without a pick, just his fingers flying away, the whammy bar and a wah-wah pedal being all he needs.

So why does “Hot Rod Honeymoon” sound a bit…electronic? It’s in the details of the album. The song was engineered and produced by Apollo 440, the band you probably best know for the song “Stop The Rock” that was used in the 2000 version of Gone in Sixty Seconds. Here, Beck’s guitar work is played off with a bit of funky drum work and the samples that come out decent. It’s certainly not for everyone, but we can dig the theme. And we certainly dig the video!
