It hasn’t happened since the mid-1980s, but there is a chance that the Chevy Camaro might actually outsell the Ford Mustang this year. Even Chevy executives are a bit suprised how well the car has been selling. The Ford guys are playing it down, but they can’t be all that excited about it.
According to a story in the Detroit Free Press, Camaro outsold Mustang by 3,000 units last month, keeping the five-month sales streak alive. Amazingly, since October, GM has sold more than 47,000 Camaros. That totally blows our mind in a good way. The car has served as a bright spot in an otherwise bleak period for General Motors.
Ford executives quoted in the Free Press story were non-plussed, essentially saying that the fan boy segment was hot and heavy after the car but they expected the sales drive to be short lived. We would have agreed with that after the first month or three, but this is sustained momentum. It’s a real pony car war!
