The original Jeep is one of the reasons we’re not a German or Japanese speaking country currently. Tough as nails, maneuverable, and able to traverse virtually every type of terrain it ever encountered, Jeeps legitimately helped us win WWII. That being said, they were constructed in the early 1940s and then beaten to within an inch of their lives in the field so they did break on occasion.
That brings us to this scene of a couple GIs working under the hood of their Jeep making some sort of repair to the 60hp Go Devil engine that provided the power for the truck. What do you think these two guys are saying to one another as they try to fix the Jeep? Judging by the style of helmet they are wearing this is pretty early on in the war effort. Those helmets are close to what American soldiers wore during WWI. The style of helmet we most associate with WWII soldiers was introduced in 1941, so it seems likely these guys either had old stuff or we’re looking at a photo from 1940.
Caption this photo! What are the two guys that are wrenching on the Jeep saying to one another?

Man I’ll bet a couple of 97’s will really really make it scoot!
That thing got a HEMI in it?
“If we just had some pantyhose I could fix it.”
“Anyone seen Corporal Kilnger?”
still better than a hounder cheevic
I told ya to feed the #$%^ squirrel!
Could be worse…. could be french!
First some observations:
1. These guys are waaaaay too clean — pressed and dressed.
2. No visible rank insignia, no MP armbands and carrying sidearms — probably officers if they are even actually in the Army.
3. Not a tool in sight nor any sign of a field manual they could be following to perform maintenance.
4. No organizational identification stenciled on bumper.
Conclusion — this is a staged photo.
What are they saying? “Look sharp. As long as we can stay on this detail we don’t have to go to the front.”
Nope this is not the one that floats
Thats why she stalled
Wait till ya see what this will do on this gas I traded a dentist a case scotch for!
C’mon, every G.I. knows they are cooking spam in the can on the exhaust manifold.
There are 56 u bolts on the awd assembly. Any one of them coming loose turned those vehicles into a deadly pole vaulter> In addition to winning the war, they produced perhaps the highest accidental death rate.
I tell ya’ frankie, Da distributer is on ‘dis side….Sarge told us so!
To piggy-back onto Mopar or NoCar:
Possibly was meant to be staged; the high-voltage, high-tension tower in the background is a tip-off that this is State-side. Also, a support vehicle can JUST be seen behind the Jeep, which incidentally appears to be a prototype. The final production Jeep had flat fenders w/ a rolled lip and no “cow-catcher” grille guard. The windshield frame is non-production, as is the hood.
The convo?
“You got any clue what this is, Harry? I sure don’t remember any of this being explained in the Actor’s Union by-laws. Hmm, what would Errol Flynn do…?”
Who is “Lobuck”? I, Birdman, wrote that reply and it certainly wasn’t on Nov. 30.
Also, whomever is using ‘Birdman’ besides me, find a new name, this one’ s taken.
