BangShift Tune Up: “The Best Things” By Filter (1999)

BangShift Tune Up: “The Best Things” By Filter (1999)

It’s a Monday morning and it’s time to get motivated. Yours truly is either running around the garage trying to get things accomplished on the car while the weather is tolerable, or is sitting at the computer, cracking knuckles and preparing to write…either way, the music is blasting to get me going. Filter has always been in my playlist…ever since I first heard “Hey Man, Nice Shot” in junior high, I was sold. I had forgotten about this video, however, so when I went on a YouTube bender and saw the cars playing in the desert, I knew it had to go up here. They jump a Charger 500. Who does that?

ABOUT THE SONG: Filter came about after Richard Patrick, the frontman, left Nine Inch Nails and formed his own band in 1993 and became well-known after their first hit, “Hey Man, Nice Shot” in 1995. “The Best Things” came off of the commercially successful 1999 release Title of Record. It wasn’t as well known as the other two singles from the album (“Welcome to the Fold” was the first track released and “Take A Picture” became one of Filter’s biggest hits), “The Best Things” did enjoy moderate radio airplay but was simply overshadowed by “Take A Picture”.

ABOUT THE VIDEO: There’s muscle cars, a rock concert, and women. While some of the visual effects are certainly rooted in the turn-of-the-Millenium styles, it’s a basic formula that works. The cars aren’t completely pretty, but aren’t beaters either. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 1971 Dodge Charger
  • 1966 Oldsmobile 442
  • 1973-75 Dodge Dart Sport
  • 1969 Dodge Charger 500
  • 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass
  • 1994-96 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1
  • 1998-newer Ford Crown Victoria P71

Are you sure “frontman” was the right word? He was a touring guitarist but NIN = Trent Reznor. Just sayin’

I agree NIN is Trent Reznor, however i think “frontman” was refering to his role in Filter. Both bands are great IMO.
