eBay Find: This 1971 Oldsmobile Toronado Would Be Perfect For Highway Cruising…It Even Has That Familiar Interior Smell!

That nearly perfect interior that still smells like you remember…is that the kind of sales pitch that you look for when hunting down a set of wheels? The smell? Sure, you don’t want to buy a car that smells like the Tacoma waterfront at low tide (that’s a smell that will haunt you for years to come…) but there is so much to like about this mint 1971 Oldsmobile Toronado that we think the seller is a bit hung up on just one item.

This Toronado represents the second generation of the GM E-body, which spawned the more accepted Cadillac Eldorado and the sole rear-drive version, the Buick Riviera. To be honest, the Oldsmobile is probably the least attractive of the three 1971 E-bodies: the Eldorado was at it’s full Boss Hogg potential and the Riviera was on the first year of it’s wild boat-tail design. Compared to the other two, the Toronado was attractive enough, so long as you didn’t walk up front. The “bottom breather” bumper design, which eliminated the traditional grille in lieu of vents under the headlights, is a love it or hate it design. But overall, this is still a very nice car to chew up the miles in. The Oldsmobile 455ci V8 and TH-425 transaxle were still plenty powerful, and this example looks to have been hermetically sealed off for the last forty-odd years and kept absolutely pristine.

Interstate 90, at it’s full length, is 3,020.54 miles long. You want a killer drive this summer? Take this Toronado, prepare some good music, have some money handy for the eastern toll roads, and go see the northern United States in the comfort of that brown leather couch right there. You won’t have to see the front end, but you will have the greatest seat in the house. Who knowns, maybe you’ll even come to enjoy the smell.

Not only is he hung up about the smell, he’s oddly vague about just what it smells like. What if you remember older car interiors smelling like mildew?

don’t forget the faint gasoline smell combined with only partially effective air conditioning and the gentle floating motion… leading to the smell of vomit in the back seat…

Don’t forget that 455 in 1971 still had decent compression and was still a full tilt boogie machine.

If it only had a second 455 drivetrain stuffed in the trunk….just think AWD, four wheel steering….
