Rough Start: This 1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass Is Done – LS-Swapped And Turn-Key!

Calm down, anti-LS brigade, it’s not worth the fight today. Cheap-car hunting and GM’s current golden child of an engine normally don’t go hand-in-hand unless you have no problem going all-in on a clapped-out fourth-gen F-body that’s probably been ridden harder than Seattle Slew. To many, that’s not that appealing of a proposition. Neither is risking a five-grand budget on a Pontiac GTO or a Chevrolet Corvette. If it’s an engine donor, that’s one thing, but to rock on the street legally, well…we’d be very suspicious, let’s just leave it at that. Besides, newer metal and shapes aren’t for everybody (see again: Pontiac GTO.) Some of us just want an older car that is dependable, cool enough to get thumbs-up without being a showpiece, and fast enough to scratch that itch when the time is just right.

This 1978 Cutlass looks passable on the surface. Stock maroon color, slot mags, red interior…not bad. Stock, you were looking at a 260 Olds, 301 Pontiac or 305 Chevrolet for a V8, or if you miscounted exhaust manifold ports when you bought the car, a Buick 3.8 V6 with no turbocharger. They will get the car moving, and that’s about it. This one, on the other hand, seems ready to go:

“The car has a 5.3 ls in it that I had went through completely. Everything in the engine is new btr camshaft Heads have extensive work done to them. Fuel system is powered by a pursisin pump that puts out plenty of flow for upgrade in the future if you want. Transmission is a th400 that has recently been gone through with Kevlar clutches and a shift kit with a 3500 fti stall. Rear end is also new it has a set of 3.73 and a mini spool. Car is setting on a set of cheater slicks. Also have the original wheels that came with the car in very good shape with good tires on them. The car is still fuel injectied no carburetor hit the key and go. Fuel injection is a stand alone unit by fitech. Comes with touch screen to make adjustments to your time and many extra capabilities.car is really solid no rust what so ever.”

This is one of those times where you find yourself chanting, “Please don’t be lying…” over and over to yourself as you send the message asking for more information. It’s pretty much your whole budget, but if this seller is truthful, what else do you need to buy?
