Corvair War: Sitting Pretty Is One Thing, But This Crown-Converted Monza Racer Stomping Corvettes And Porsches Is Another!

Corvair War: Sitting Pretty Is One Thing, But This Crown-Converted Monza Racer Stomping Corvettes And Porsches Is Another!

I can’t knock Lohnes for picking the Yenko Stinger…it’s a given that if you aren’t going for a V8-converted ‘Vair, that the Yenko is the way to go. Looking at for sale ads on Craigslist and eBay for a dream car is awesome, we aren’t going to lie. I was doing that long before I got hired on…it’s where I look to for dream builds, and where I’ve found the cars I’ve run as projects. But looking at pictures of a car is kind of like looking at a dirty magazine: sure, the pictures are nice and might do something for you, but wouldn’t you rather be in the middle of the action, hearing the noises, feeling the sensations? Yeah, thought so. Since actually racing a car on the track is something that you, dear reader, will have to actually organize, we will provide you with the next best substitute: a video of someone having the kind of fun you wish you were having. In this case, it is Mike Levine and his Crown conversion Corvair.

Powered by one of two engines (either a 383ci or 406ci small block) and backed with a four-speed, this Corvair is a regular around Road Atlanta, appearing in historical races. It’s a screamer and a handler, and as this footage from the 2013 HSR Historics race will show, it can handle the best out there on the track. Corvette Grand Sport? Sure. Porsche? No problem. All while making a noise that is pleasing to the ear and a stimulant to the heart.

Does the boss have anything left for this war? We will see…

Couldn’t get the above to post as a pic, but the above link is worth the look. I think it was taken at this same race.

Cool car, not sure how it’s legal for vintage racing, must run in an exhibition class. Doesn’t seem to fit any vintage rules unless it was run like this way back when?

It is vintage legal in A Sports Racer. James Reeve took a Crown V8 to the SCCA runoffs in 1971 and David McIntosh campaigned a Crown V8 in the southeast division of SCCA from 1977 through 80.

Frank Gardner won the Australian super car series in the 70s with a Highly modified Mid Engine Corvair.
