Pointing out that the 1973-77 GM A-bodies’ rise in popularity is simply a formality at this point. The truth is that they are roomy handlers that can be built into a stomping, roomy muscle car for not a lot of investment. You can dig through Craigslist and if you’re good you can find a potential candidate, but as everyone knows, for the easiest project, you start with the best example you can find and go from there, and in our eyes this week, this 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna is the cat’s meow.
The 1973 Chevelle is a one-year-only styling treatment, with the smaller rear bumper layout, the last version of the twin-circle taillights for the GM A-body line, and the first year for the Laguna package, which was meant to be the top-tier model in the Chevelle lineup. The unique front end treatment, complete with different grille, looks killer stock…mostly because somehow Chevrolet managed to keep a huge honking railroad tie of a bumper off of the front end. Dressed in triple black, and packing the no-surprise 350ci small block and automatic transmission, this Laguna would be amazing on it’s own and left alone, but you know us: warm up the engine, especially if it’s the numbers-matching block, and give this Chevelle the power that Chevy was trying to hide from the EPA!

actually… not bad of a looking ride
and that engine compartment looks like it can house just about anything
There was a 235 horsepower 454 option in 1973.
The Laguna is an A-body. It’s not obvious to me whether it’s a body-on-frame design or unibody.
All A-bodies up to ’88 were body on frame. This is the only year I like of the 3rd gen Chevelle. Put a Laguna nose on it and would be perfect!
Damn! Didn’t even notice the heading about it being a Laguna and NOVA427SS respond.
Body on frame..most of these rusted away by 1976. Swivel bucket seats were the only noteworthy options.
I prefer the ’75-ish Laguna front end, but these are seriously cool cars. I learned from PHR that you can actually fit a 13″ wide rear tire on these without minitubs or anything.
Thats the Laguna nose that year. Ive got the optional 454 in my 73 Monte, and its stock and runs really well, plenty of power for low compression big block.
Sweet looking Laguna.
hotrod mag did a build on one of these the last year they put 454’s in them
Actually the 73 Laguna was my first new car. 454, 4 spd, AC, bench seat. Top speed 115. Triple Cranberry color. They are very heavy cars compaired to earlier cars. Nice riding car.
I have a nice rust free Malibu like this for sale. 109K original miles. Needs a little work but would make a nice cruiser.
