The Chevrolet Vega might have been tainted goods after the rust started to appear and the engines started to go boom, but that didn’t mean that the whole platform was bad. Chevrolet just needed to find a way to work around the image issue…and, as they had to have learned, work around the problem areas as well. Enter the Chevrolet Monza, a sporty hatchback machine that looked like a racy, compact Camaro but offered up the small car vibe. Okay, not a bad way to go. But if you wanted the ultimate Monza, if you wanted to be the bad mother on the block, you shelled out $38,000 in 1970s cash and you went racing in a DeKon Engineering-built H-body. Seventeen cars were built as racers…one Pontiac Astre, one Buick Skyhawk, and the rest were Monzas that packed a tube chassis and over 600 horsepower. And the bodywork…the box flares on the fender, the cowl scoop hood, the ducktail spoiler. A Monza looked kind of aggressive normally, more so with the Spider package. But the DeKon cars looked like violence, and they acted accordingly.
It is highly unlikely that you’ll get your hands on a legit IMSA racing Monza. But what about a street-going version with a pissed-off small block underhood? We’ve got you covered. It’s black, it’s evil, and it’s the perfect balance between all-out racer and a street car you can drive around town. There’s no details because the seller put none up, but what do you see? An IMSA wide-body kit, a full interior and wheelwells that still have some room left if you really want to get crazy with the power figures. This is a neat little machine!
I love it. But for 9k, it needs to be a LOT nicer and with a cage
You guys posted this pretty near my hometown just when I’m shopping for a new daily driver. It’s a bit out of my price range, and I can’t tell if it has air conditioning – these may be the only things saving me from my own bad ideas.
Not far from my brother’s house! If that sunroof doesn’t scream 70’s, maybe add a set of Cragars?
This is my Monza , you guys actually featured it years ago on eBay in primer when I did a VIN search after I found it at a dealers auction. I have been an H body fan since day 1 , I was 16 when the IMSA Monzas came out and was working on stuffing a 396 in a Vega at that time, autoweek had great coverage of the Porsche Bmw Monza battles . I still have my AFX Dekon slot car. Who would have dreamed that later in life I would be racing and driving with guys who drove with Al Holbert. After my road racing came to an end I picked up a Monza drag car and this car is my 3rd , not counting the LS Vega. I wanted a street Monza and even though this was festooned with hundreds of stickers I had to have it.
