Rough Start: Do You Remember Finding 1975 Chevrolet Malibus Like This?

Rough Start: Do You Remember Finding 1975 Chevrolet Malibus Like This?

If I had the money to buy a car circa 1994, the buying process would’ve looked a lot like this: a ton of decrepit second-gen F-bodies, a sea of 1980s era GM G-bodies and Fox Mustangs and mid-1970s GMs that shared way too much likenesses with this 1975 Malibu that I located for today’s Rough Start selection. Those likenesses include wheels that never came with the car and certainly didn’t fit the look, like the Oldsmobile-sourced selection on this car; a paint color that was decidedly 1970s, like …what is that, burnt sienna?! And an interior that is 50% original, for better or worse, and 50% Aunt Kathy-approved (see color-matching seat cover for proof). And that AM radio…wow…how did that manage to not get scrapped for anything better?

While it’s almost laughable, I enjoy finding cars like this because you know that not much has been messed with. If nobody bothered to gut the factory AM radio out of the car in over forty years, nobody did much of any kind of hackery. Aside from the wired-in FM receiver, wheels and the exhaust that certainly did not come with the car, it’s a good shot that everything is as it was from the factory, just aged a bit. And that always makes for a great start when you are hunting for an older project car. Buff up the paint, find some appropriate wheels, and give the 400ci small-block underhood some attention and you will be rolling along nicely for low cash imput. The car is up for $2,800…surely some buffing compound, tune-up equipment and a set of Chevy rally wheels can’t eat the rest of the budget up!

Rust free examples of this model are big bucks around Chicago. Dig the ashtray in the door for back seat passengers.

F*** OFF, LARRY! WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW SOMETHING LIKE THIS? I went the whole Sparkomatic route on a 1970 Dart Swinger outta highschool (FM converter, amp/equalizer, cassette deck, 6 X 9’s in the rear deck, the whole deal!) and I got the CHICKS! To ride in my car… ’cause I had a cool stereo…. and I’d drop ’em off at the football field where their monster boyfriends were at practice…. and they’d thank me fer “lookin’ after my girl” and bein’ a good dude….. my life sucked!!!! Oh, well… Could do something with that 400 for not nmuch money and have the ultimate ugly sleeper!

I bought a \’75 Monte Carlo, my second Monte, for Christmas 1988. Drove it for 18 months before going away to the USMC rehab program. The car sat for four years before being driven for another 18 months. It\’s been patiently waiting for me to monkey love a half dozen other projects as age grows, life twists, and health declines. It\’s my bucket list car….for now, there will be another after it\’s done……if I can ever get to it.
