Sleeper Supreme! This 1985 Chevrolet El Camino Looks Like A Clean Driver, But Is Packing 427 Power Under The Hood!

Here’s how this one panned out: as Lohnes and I sit in Maine cranking out stories, I decided to paw through the Mecum Kissimmee auction that is coming up later this month to find some iron to torment him with. Sure, stuff like a dog-dish-equipped, unrestored Hemi ‘Cuda is gold for anyone, and yes, I know that a M151 “Mutt” and a 36,000 mile 1975 Dodge D100 Adventurer that is clean enough to eat off of is striking next to Brian’s tastes, but having already looked through the catalog once for a Top 11 shopping list (HEY, SANTA: You forgot me again, you fat bastard!) I must have skipped over a few cars because I would have remembered seeing this 1985 Chevrolet El Camino in the lineup. Or maybe not…stock brown paint and body-colored Rally wheels on a modestly clean G-body ElCo isn’t that eye catching. But a half-second’s look at the listing brought up something that I know I didn’t see: 427 and a four speed?

Be honest: you know where there is an Elky near where you live that pretty much lines up with this one’s overall demeanor, right? Cowl hood and a few minor touches on a stocker. So what’s the deal with the 427? It’s legit…a 1966 vintage big-block sits under that hood, and is backed up to a Thank you, Lord! four-speed manual transmission. As long as the engine isn’t seized up, we’d be on board all day long, stock factory interior and all. Because as long as the exhaust is quiet, who else but you and the builder would ever know?

  1. ANGRYJOE

perfect as a driver and cruise night brawler….a little interior love and maybe some suspension goodies to allow it to handle a bit better…these things rode great but it was like a boat rather that a boulevard bomber…
