Sport Truck Meets Pro Street: This 1989 Chevrolet C-1500 Is Two Eras In One

Sport Truck Meets Pro Street: This 1989 Chevrolet C-1500 Is Two Eras In One

Welcome to pretty much every magazine I read as a young child. Outside of the copies of 4Wheel and Off-Road that my stepdad read and all of the Dirt Wheels that I was thumbing through during my motorcycle racer phase, this 1989 Chevrolet C-1500 sums up just about everything that was out there at the time: high-dollar builds  with lots of pretty parts, Pro Street in it’s later forms, and sport trucks. You couldn’t get away from these things! Pro Street was winding down, but you would still see a Chevelle, or a Mustang, or something off-the-wall like a Caprice or a Chevy Celebrity rolling Mickey Thompson steamrollers out back. The sport truck scene was on fire, and of course, this exact truck was at the forefront of the movement. The 1988-99 Chevrolet truck was the sport truck on the scene. The aftermarket went genuinely insane with options for the GM truck and you could go as mild or as wild as you dared to dream in any aspect of modification. The sky was the limit…so long as your budget could handle it.

Somebody’s budget went for broke on this particular truck. A Ron Shavers-built Keith Black 468 is underhood, wearing Brodix heads and a BDS 6-71 supercharger being driven at 1:1. An Art Carr TH400 takes the abuse, and a Winters quick-change rear puts the power to the tires. Big names have played with this build…among the names listed in the sale ad include Art Carr, Jerry Covington, Pete Santini, Ron Mangus and several others. With a claimed 3,600 miles on the clock, a claim that it’s never been raced, and an appraisal for $140,000, we have to wonder why it’s being sold in the first place. Then we look at the starting bid of $48,999, and the last line: “If it doesn’t sell this time putting it back in the collection and keeping it.”

Rescue this truck out of the misery of being cooped up in a garage somewhere and get it out on the road. Summer is approaching, and with it all of the neat roadtrip events that happen.

I actually am the owner of this. It is nice and comfortable tucked in for the winter, don\’t feel to sorry for it. Thank you for writing such a nice price on it though and if you ever want anymore info I would be glad to share. The only reason we were selling it is cuz we\’re in the middle of building a house but after reading your article we decided we\’ll just keep it tucked away for a little while longer.
