Totally 1990s: This 1993 Callaway C8 SuperNatural Needs To Hit An Airfield Half-Mile Event!

Totally 1990s: This 1993 Callaway C8 SuperNatural Needs To Hit An Airfield Half-Mile Event!

I’ll admit right now that I’m sure the first reaction that a lot of you will have over this Callaway C8 SuperNatural is a wince. Welcome back to 1993, folks, when aerodynamic design was going straight off of the deep end. Rounded curves, sloping glass and any and every aero trick in the book was an option. It was also the point where the Second Horsepower War started to really take flight, with the introduction of the 1993 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird’s fourth-generation variation. Swoopy and low, the cars would push to the upper-150 MPH limit with their 275-horsepower LT-1 V8 engines, plenty respectable today and back then, jaw-dropping. But more was available if you wanted to pay…and if you were going to pay, why not pay the company responsible for one of the biggest sledgehammers from the 1980s?

Callaway Cars turned the C4 Corvette into something to behold with the Twin-Turbo package, a program that GM initiated to give the Corvette a kick in the ass. And Callaway delivered…RPO B2K delivered a car that would put a Lamborghini owner in their place, and when they got high on their own supply, they created a monster, the “Sledgehammer” car that ran 254.76 MPH in a top-speed run. That kind of win carried into the 1990s, even after the Corvette program was exchanged for the ZR-1 in-house build. Anything Callaway-branded had to be gold, and the Camaro was the natural next choice. So what if it looks like Callaway managed to predict the 1998 Chrysler Concorde’s arrival…404 horsepower out of a 383ci can cure a lot of ills, and having Brembo four-pot rotors in 1993 was something to behold, something exceptional, something radical.

Welcome, for better or for worse, to the far end of what the early 1990s could provide. The styling might be questionable, the wheels dated, the power figure not as impressive at first glance. But you know what we want to see most? This sucker at a land-speed event, cutting through the wind like a razor blade. We bet it still runs like a bat out of hell.

If you didn’t tell us that this was built in 1993, I’d have thought that was a body kit trying to imitate the C6 Corvette.
