Sipping Fuel: Will A Lawnmower Carburetor Work On A Small-Block Ford?

Sipping Fuel: Will A Lawnmower Carburetor Work On A Small-Block Ford?

The day this video came out, I went to put fuel into my Charger. I quit pumping at $50 worth of 100% 87 octane gasoline and I still have plenty of room in the tank for more. Add in a thirsty pickup truck, a Fox-body that drinks like a single soldier on Friday night, and the current fuel prices and I promise you, readers, that the Chevy Volt that pulls daily driver duty here at BangShift Mid-West looks like the smartest decision I’ve made in years. Don’t get me wrong…there is nothing that will replace that V8 charm that I’ve loved ever since I was a little kid. But dammit, we’re getting close to the point where my wallet will be able to invoke the Geneva Conventions if I keep this up.

Luke is one of those people who is fascinated by the technical aspect of a project. He likes fast and loud, sure. But he’s more interested in what makes it loud, why it’s fast, and how you unlock the combination to get to that point. When I was re-engineering the disaster area that is a Chevrolet Cruze’s intake manifold, he was texting me, wondering what I was doing, what I was using, and so on. Luke’s been kind of underground for a bit, but his latest video brings him back in a big way. Yes, there will be a lawn mower carburetor attempting to feed the small-block in his gloriously ratty Ford Maverick. You’ll get to see what happens there soon enough. But dig how he made the adapter plate that mated said lawnmower carburetor to the Maverick’s engine…a 3D printer is certainly a useful tool!

100 M.P.G. carb, turns liquid fuel to a vapor gas, by heat from the exhaust headers, ( like a camp stove heats cans of fuel..than a vapor carb. (like for propane/cng fuel).

Ran a tiny carb on a Mopar V8 years back. It would ice up and stall eventually due to the refrigeration effect of the high velocity through the carb venturi. Did get a noticeable jump in fuel mileage.

Another good low tech tool for adapters if you don’t have hi tech goodies is one of those thick plastic cutting boards drilled and cut to whatever you need.

I’ve also adapted carbs with wood. It worked surprisingly well in that I live in a hot area and the wood isolates the heat going into the carb when the motor is shut down. Better hot starts.
