There is a good reason why we have been lamenting the loss of the Australian automobile manufacturing arena: they cranked out some useful, yet badass rides that work in a wide range of applications. Cars, utes, and whatever else they built…it’s good stuff, and unfortunately 2017 is pretty much the end-point for it. Which means that we are patiently watching the clock for the EPA 25-year import bar for certain models, like this Ford FPV F6 Typhoon. Quite a name, isn’t it? Let’s break down what it’s all about: It’s built by Ford Australia under their FPV nameplate (similar to how SVT worked here in the States), it’s based off a BA Falcon (the MkII face lifted version), it’s rocking the Barra 4.0L inline-six from the factory, and in the case of this particular car, it’s also still sporting the Tremec T-56 six-speed manual transmission. Compared to the V8 versions of the FPV line, the Typhoon was relatively understated: minimal dress, low wing, and not much to advertise in the way of visuals.
We’ve shown you what the Barra Six is capable of. Like a lot of Japanese inline engines, a little reworking and a lot of boost equals sincerely stunning power outputs. This particular car, looking mostly stock, is pushing just over 1,100 horsepower, and that isn’t a misprint in the least. The Tremec is a good transmission, but knowing that it has to convert the grunt of a pissed off and force-fed six into forward motion makes us want to say a prayer for it. Keep fighting the good fight, little buddy…
