Consider this the biggest “no-brainer” Rough Start find yet. A 1989 Ford Mustang on it’s own accord, running and driving, that is at least a ten-footer if not better for under five thousand dollars is worth the coin every day of the week. But one of the 549 Mustang hatchbacks that got turned into a Saleen Mustang that year? From a performance standpoint, it’s a Fox Mustang with a steroid shot. From a collector standpoint, it’s the kind of find that induces dreams of Barrett-Jackson auctions and big-dollar figures. From a driver’s standpoint, it’s a worked-over Fox Mustang. See what we’re getting at here? It’s damn hard to lose on a clean Fox Mustang that hasn’t been hacked up to bits.
So what’s the deal with this particular car? It’s not stock, it looks to be used and driven like Saleen and Ford intended, and it looks cared for. The seller admits that the paint and the seats could use some attention, but overall, the car looks clean and complete, and like G.I. Joe said, that’s half the battle. Either way, $4,800 steals it away if you move now…we’d be on the phone if it didn’t guarantee a cast-iron skillet upside our heads!
I personally think that the Fox Body is the sweetest looking Mustang since the original model. This is the first Saleen conversion I have ever seen as I didn’t think that Saleen went that far back. The $4,800 price tag makes me think that there’s a lot more wrong with it than the paint and seats needing attention though – particularly as shipping it to the UK would add another $1000 or so on to the price. Two years ago I saw an absolutely MINT Fox Body with a well fitted and handsome bodykit for roughly the same price (£3,500) for sale in Gateshead where I live in the NE of England, although I suspect that it may have been a 2.3 turbo model. That would have been fine as I could have sold what amounts to a hopped up bored out Pinto for more than that as old Ford Escort enthusiasts would have taken my hand off for a chance to fit it into their ride. That would have paid for a hot V8 swap and all would have been right with my world – except that Wor Lass wanted a new kitchen……..
Always liked the Saleen and Steeda conversions and at that price, it won’t last that long.
It needs an LS swap to be really cool!
That’s for you Geordie 🙂
Can’t go wrong for the money…Fox bodies are only going to appreciate and enjoy strong aftermarket support. I hope whoever gets it looks after it and enjoys it…LS or not.
Don’t think I can look at my LX coupe the same way now knowing the wanker likes them.
Sigh………..
I’m so pleased you’ve learnt a new word!
Thats a hell of a buy, and a local car for me. If I weren’t trying to buy a 63 LeMans I’d go for it.
