Four-door Fursday: Five of the coolest four-doors ever

Four-door Fursday: Five of the coolest four-doors ever

In yesterday’s Craigslist Bait-N-Switch of the Week, I mentioned that the Skylark in question had two doors two many. A few of our Facebook fans took issue with the lack of respect for sedans and four-door hardtops. “Nothing wrong with 4 doors. I don’t see what everyone has against them,” wrote Keith Woldring. “I guarantee my 4 door will make some 2 door guys cry,” says Amanda Martin. The fact is, though, most four-door American cars from the 1960s suffer from the kind of styling that makes them look like they were rushed through the styling department on a Friday afternoon just before two weeks of shutdown. Yet, there are some super-cool, four-d0or American cars from each of the big three and beyond, from the early days right on up through the modern era that have style, power and won’t necessarily break the bank.

Hudson Hornet

The Fabulous Hudson Hornets that Marshall Teague, Herb Thomas and Tim Flock drove were two-doors, but the four-door Hornets offered Twin-H power as well as an extra set of doors that blended right into the body and hardly looked like they were there. There’s virtually no styling difference between the two-door and the four-door Hornets, featuring wind-cheating aerodynamics.

Lincoln Continental

1961 Lincoln Continental-15

Elwood Engel’s styling triumph made four-doors about as cool as they’d ever get. If you laid out money for the convertible, you got four doors whether you wanted them or not. Riding on a relatively short 123-inch wheelbase, the Continental’s suicide doors were there for practicality, and style was a bonus that made these cars completely unique in the marketplace. Lincoln sold the bejeesus out of them, too. Their relative abundance means you can still buy a 1961 to 1969 hardtop for reasonable dough.

Corvair

Corvair

There’s just something super-cool about that shade that hangs out over the rear window of the first generation Corvair. The ‘Vair sedan was available with the 140hp, four-carb flat six and a four-speed, which will give an early 911 a run for its money in the right hands. With decent tires inflated to the proper psi, early Corvairs can be a track day machine.

Pontiac G8 GT and GXP

G8 GXP

The G8 GXP is simply one of the coolest sedans to ever come out of an American car company. With 402hp and a six-speed, and underpinnings straight from our Aussie pals at Holden, the G8 GXP kicked serious ass, but showed up at the very height of the economic downturn and never found an audience. The GXP is super-rare, but the GT is a fine alternative with its six-speed automatic and 5.3-second 0-to-60 times. It may still look a bit like a Grand Am, but the dude in the 5 Series at the light next to you won’t confuse it the next time he meets up with you.

Dodge Charger

Charger

I have never been a huge MOPAR fan, but I will say this with no irony whatsoever: Out of all the 50 some-odd brand new cars I drove last year, my favorite all-around regular automobile last year was the Dodge Charger SXT with all-wheel drive, an eight-speed trans and the Pentastar V6. It’s got zero-to-60 times as good as that of the sixth-generation Hemi cars with 31 miles to the gallon on the highway. Of course, if you’re willing to pass up the all-wheel drive and the pretty incredible fuel mileage of the six, you’ve got a choice of two V8s and up to 470hp. And I’d like to personally thank Chrysler for equipping cop cars with those 64 LED bulbs at the rear. I can spot them for about six miles off.

You put a Corvair on the list but left off?:

    94-96 Impala SS
    57-58 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham
84-85 Ford LTD LX 5 liter

You can still get the G8, only now it’s the Chevy SS.

hey, gotta correct you slightly on the G8…`coolest sedans to ever come out of an American car company’ and ` underpinnings straight from our Aussie pals at Holden’ – really? The whole damn car was built in Australia…. in fact the only non Aussie bit is the LS ` underpinnings’ ! picky, I know…

I would have put the Marauder on here long before most of these. I understand its Modular powered, and you guys sure dont pay a lot of respect to those….

  4. GuitarSlinger

You put the fugly as all h*ll wallowing pig in a mud bog handling Dodge Charger and that pathetic Holden remake masquerading as a Pontiac G8 , GT and the ludicrously named GTP [ the only more ludicrous name Pontiac ever using being the GTO moniker ] .. and the freaking Corvair 4dr on the list

Thats just wrong . And totally not BangShift/Gearhead approved !

And anyway . If its hard core performance and coolness 4drs y’alls looking for … you’ll need to be looking over Europe way to find the best of the best . Everything we’ve ever done being a compromise of one sort or another. At best .

If ya hate American cars so much why don’t you go over to the foreign crap.com web site.

The GXP is 415hp and 415tq. I would know, I’ve owned one. I understand this oversight, however, since you placed the fiat charger as number one on this list; clearly your ducks aren’t all in a row.

  6. Tim

You guys put a new charger on the list and not a CTS-V??? I know they make a coupe, now, but the 4 door V still beats the hell outta that Charger!

    1. 4

If they still built a Cadillac engine it might. But not even close with the Chevy engines they’re forced to deal with.

  7. CT

The GLARING omission here would be the CTS-V! It’s basically a 4-door ZL1, and I can’t think of a better looking or performing production sedan.

  8. jerry z

No love for the 94-96 Impala SS! At least you should have picked the 65-69 Corvair over that fugly 1st gen model.

  9. Kaleb Kelley

Anybody could sit here and critique the choices because of your preferences. Personally, I think the fact that the Charger, Chevy SS, Taurus SHO, and CTS-V even exist now is a glorious thing. Many hate on the Charger’s four-door configuration, but it is just glorious. You have the Chally for a 2-door muscle car from Ma Mopar. If you have a kid and need more room, wouldn’t you still want to drive a muscle car instead of a Camry? Appreciate the fact that these practical, badass four-door options are still out there. Great article.
