(Yes, we know, we’ve ran this one before. But at the time of writing, we learned that Vincent Paul Abbott, a.k.a. Vinnie Paul…or that dude behind the drum kit…passed on at the age of 54. Vinnie’s drumming spans decades and was the driving force behind Pantera, Damageplan and Hellyeah. Finding a song that showed him going full-kill on the kit that works for BangShift seemed hard…except for this video. Rest in peace, Vinnie…your brother is waiting for you. -McT)
It’s got a black ‘Cuda, girls, a bonfire party, Pantera’s Vinnie Paul and a bassline that doesn’t quit. Hellyeah’s “Cowboy Way” isn’t a technical song, it really isn’t trying to tell a story, or anything pretentious. It’s just a good old-fashioned rock song that encourages you to put your foot that much further through the floor. If you get a strong hint of Texas/Southern Rock from the track, don’t be too surprised: the album, Stampede, was written and recorded at Vinnie Paul’s Texas home and studio, and no doubt the recording sessions were supplanted by cookouts, parties, and alcohol.
The videos for both “Cowboy Way” and “Hell of a Time” were done at the same time, with both videos using some of the local street machines for filming. Either song is good and showcases plenty of decent iron, but we chose “Cowboy Way” simply because it’s been a long winter and motivation is needed, and if cheap booze, good barbecue and two hot Texas women in short shorts won’t do it for you, certainly a black ‘Cuda frying the tires off at the start of the song will.
