Work Truck Dreaming: This 1977 Dodge Power Wagon Is Very Worthy

The desire for a truck has hit hard, readers. Real hard. I’ve only owned two actual pickups and if we want to get picky about it, a total of four truck-ish vehicles. Three of those are Dodge products (1984 Ramcharger, 1984 D-100, and 2001 Ram 1500 5.9) and the other is a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer two door that I can’t talk enough crap about. Why Dodges? Blame it on the windstorms that come through the Pacific Northwest every so often. In the 1995 windstorm that struck in December, a tan and white 1978 Dodge club cab got tagged in the nose by a falling tree. The otherwise low mile and cared for truck wound up at our lot with a caved-in nose and nothing else. We shot replacement sheet metal in primer and hung it to make a decent pickup out of the 318-powered rig and left the rest alone. It was the first vehicle that I was allowed to drive on public roads with my parents in the car. Putting a young teenager behind the wheel of a Club Cab Dodge for a 3.5 mile drive back to the house on rural Washington roads might not have been the best idea, but it was far from the worst, and I immediately fell in love with the truck. I loved the way it drove, the way it felt…all of it.

So yeah, a 1970s Dodge truck has been on the brain. And this 1977 W-100 Power Wagon isn’t helping matters. It’s the same two-tone layout as that rig from time past, it’s a four-wheel-drive instead of a two-wheel-drive, and that 400 under the hood should feel a bit more impressive than the 318 and highway gears did. But it’s the overall feeling of being left alone over forty-odd years that has me sold: wagon wheels, no massive lift kit, no hackery in the interior, a clean underhood…all of that warms my cold heart. It’s the grandfather rig, the one that has been properly cared for from the day it was purchased. If it’s been restored, don’t tell me, I don’t want to know. I just want this thing in my driveway.

Rare, yep, most people who would buy a truck that big (extra cab, long bed, 4×4) would opt for a 3/4 ton and get the hardware to back it up.
