Two Of The Most Unlikely Rally Cars We’ve Ever Seen In Action: An Early C3 Corvette And A Ferrari 308!

A Ferrari 308 and an early C3-era Chevrolet Corvette racing isn’t that big of a deal, even against each other in the same race. Both nameplates are pretty much synonymous with multiple forms of racing and have competed with each other for years. But to see either one on a rally course is a bit strange. Ferrari does have some loose ties to rally: they supplied the engines for the Lancia Stratos and the 288 GTO was originally a homologation effort for Group B rally that kind of fizzled out. Corvettes, on the other hand, generally don’t play on the dirt officially. But this early C3, complete with Guldstrand-esque fitted headlights is doing just that, and the Ferrari is actually making a great case for taking the gold-chainer’s supercar off-road…it looks like a larger Lancia and almost looks right at home on the tight course! This footage is from the 2012 Rallye Critérium Jurassien in Switzerland. We are surprised to see either of these cars on a rally stage, and are only more surprised by the fact that race was actually allowed in Switzerland, a country that has had a motorsport ban in place since 1955.

The ‘Vette certainly out-handles the Ferrari!

The most awesome rally car I have ever seen – but in period Mitchelotto- modified Ferrari 308s were quite common in rallying and quite a few are still in use today and even crop up in for sale ads from time to time!

I’d rather have the Corvette though – I should explain that I have always regarded the Corvette as a separate entity and nothing to do with the cursed Chevrolet….

Well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

I good friend of mine is currently restoring a C3 Corvette rally car to as raced condition, so they are out here in the states as well.
