RAREST of the RARE – Barris Built Pontiac Firebird Goes Up For Auction

George Barris built some insanely cool customs in his time and was particularly well-known for building customs that were found on tv shows. From the sublime to the ridiculous, George has built some of the most well known tv and movie cars of the 1960’s and 1970’s. His most famous include the original Batmobile, Adams Family rides, the Monkees machine, and the Red Wrecker just to name a few.

This Firebird was also built for TV and is incredibly rare. Luckily Tommy Lee Byrd found it, the details, and more at the Mecum auction in Chattanooga.

Video Description:

Check out this wild George Barris custom, built for a TV show back in 1968. This car was 1 of only 3 built by Barris, and it’s the only one known to exist today. It started as a 1968 Pontiac Firebird convertible, and got the full Barris treatment with molded front end, custom bumpers, side scoops, spoiler and a metal flake paint job. Other cool items are the Hurst wheels, which are pretty rare pieces. I spotted the Superteen Firebird at Mecum Auctions in Chattanooga, and thought you guys might like to see a truly RARE custom car.

George Barris didn’t build the Monkey Machine, It was built by Dean Jefferies. Barris somehow came to own it and everyone thinks he built it. He never would admit he didn’t build it and often would say things like “we did this to it” and “we did that to it”
He didn’t do anything. He was a big blow hard, his brother was the one with the talent at Barris Customs.
