There aren’t many BangShifters in the world that have owned just one T5 transmission. Why? Because they shatter like glass when the going gets fun and the horsepower levels rise from tepid to warm. BangShift form member Tyler Gibson has a kick ass 1947 Chevy truck that is built for autocross action.
Like a proper corner carver, the budget truck has a stick box in it. Due to the budget being small, a T5 was the order of the day. This baby gave its life during some spritied driving. What you see in the photo is what remains of third gear, which is not a whole lot. The good news is that wrecking yards are full of these transmissions, so blowing one up won’t cost you much in replacement cash, just some bloody knuckles swapping it.
This must have sounded AWESOME when it happened.

that’s not third gear, that’s the gears that turn all the other gears except 4th. Although he probably was in 3rd gear when it happened.
I still have only owned one T5, because I never installed it in a car. They aren’t very useful for big block guys
I kinda thought the same thing. Carnage pictures are always cool though! RIS T5.
(Rest In Scrap) =P
The T5 was loaded up in 3rd gear around 6,500 RPM. Not sure of the specific name for the first input gear that was ruined. Next to that on the right is 3rd gear and then 4th gear. Apologies for submitting unclear information in the email.
My Dad was driving the truck when it broke so I missed the epic sound.
Awesome!! Built cheap and used hard!
I would imagine that truck is pretty light….maybe that’s why its lasted as long as it has?
I fogot to add the T5 was a 2.8 V6 unit from an ’84 S-10. It survived over a year and a half of high RPM powershifing on the street and autox.
The replacement T5 is a World Class unit, and it has done just fine, although I have been considerably nicer to it.
“Next to that on the right is 3rd gear and then 4th gear.”
Meant to type 2nd gear instead of 4th gear.
That will buff out.
That looks identical to the wcT-5 I pulled out of my 59 Chevy pickup yesterday! I was leaving work, put it in third, put it to the floor and Blamo. I had 15 more miles to get home and only fourth. Rolling out into traffic in fourth was interesting.
