Cause and Effect: Hard Stick Shift Launches and Tweaked Splines

Cause and Effect: Hard Stick Shift Launches and Tweaked Splines

Stick shift drag race cars are glorious in our book. They are also quirky, can be hard on parts, and are (on the whole) less consistent than automatic cars in the sportsman ranks. During a recent visit to Tube Chassis Designz in Hanson, MA we saw an input shaft that didn’t look quite right. As it turns out, that’s because it wasn’t. The big beefy shaft and the equally man-sized splines had obviously seen better days.

So what could have caused this? After the photos, hit the video and you’ll see the very car that the shaft came out of, Steve Clukey’s 1970 Duster. With a bored and stroked 340 now measuring more than 380ci, it runs low 9s and has NEVER been equipped with an automatic. Big tires, big horsepower, and huge revs off the line can do some interesting things.
