Celebrity Car Death Match: Lincoln Edition – The “Deathmobile” From Animal House VS The Original Batmobile!

Celebrity Car Death Match: Lincoln Edition – The “Deathmobile” From Animal House VS The Original Batmobile!

When I set about thinking of two Lincoln celebrity cars to put into the celebrity can death match battle ring, I didn’t understand how tough it would be to find a pair of good ones. My list was exactly two long and that’s why we have a pair of “mobiles” squaring off in this fight today. This could either be a lop sided runaway for one car or a shocking upset for the other, I do not want to influence voting, so I’ll stop there. Before we profile today’s fighters let’s check the big board for yesterday’s results:

[box_dark]Yesterday it was an all Chrysler battle and a landslide to boot!

A pair of modified and iconic Lincolns lead our charge into battle today. One from what could be the best comedy movie of all time and the other from a television series that has spawned countless movies, spinoffs, and a lot of iconic vehicles. While neither of these cars look like Lincolns in their famous form, they both are and that”s what counts.

We’ll start with the famous 1964 Lincoln Continental that began life as Delta house pledge “Flounder’s” older brother’s car that was on loan for the weekend. The big Lincoln was immediately a hit with the brothers in the frat house who thrashed it on road trips to see their favorite soul band, to pick up girls at the sorority house, and to artfully sideswipe and crash into stuff. The car would be transformed into one of the great movie vehicles of all time by house member D-Day after the fraternity house was placed under tough sanctions by the evil Dean Wormer. The guys added a steel turret, steam whistle, head of Emil Faber (founder of Faber College where the movie was filmed), scary graphics front and rear, and of course the name “Deathmobile” along the side. They dressed this creation in a parade float that looked like a huge cake with the words, “EAT ME” slathered down the sides. In a last act of defiance, the guys used the Deathmobile to lay waste to the Faber College homecoming parade….without killing anyone. Power probably came from a 430ci MEL motor backed by a twin range Turbo Drive Lincoln transmission. It is one of the most humorous movie cars of all time.

Idling patiently in this corner is the original Batmobile. Based on the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, it was turned into the Batmobile by George Barris and his crew in a matter of weeks back in ’66. The car is certainly an icon and was world famous during the 1966-1986 run of the original television show which starred Adam West as the caped crusader. Originally power was provided by a 368ci Lincoln engine but because of problems on the set that thing was yanked and a 390ci FE mill was the power plant for most of the time during the car’s run on television. It was (fictionally) equipped with such functions and features as (according to a historical page we found on the car):

  • Emergency Bat-turn Lever (releases the Batmobile’s parachute that enables quick turns)
  • Bat-ray (capable of many tasks, such as remotely opening quarry’s vehicle doors)
  • Automatic fire extinguisher
  • Mobile Batcomputer (in trunk)
  • Bat Beam
  • Emergency tire inflator
  • Bat Smoke Screen
  • Bat-tering Ram (also known as the Bat-ram, used for knocking down reinforced doors)
  • Voice Control Batmobile Relay Unit
  • Bat-photoscope (works in conjunction with the Microfilm Crime File in the Batcave. Through this device a photo from the crime file can be reproduced remotely in the Batmobile.)
  • Batphone
  • Police band cut-in switch
  • Mobile tracking scope
  • Remote Bat Computer Switch
  • Anti-theft switch

We’re not sure any of those extra features would be enough to directly defeat the Deathmobile  but they may give Batman an edge. You have to leave Robin out of this…in fact you should leave Robin out of every single Batman conversation ever. It is just the right thing to do. Barris recently sold the original car for 4.2-million bucks at Barrett-Jackson. Considering that he bought the Futura concept car from Ford for $1.00…he did OK.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. TWO OF THE MOST FAMOUS LINCOLN’S TO EVER HIT THE SILVER SCREEN. NOW WE NEED YOUR VOTES. WHICH IS IT GOING TO BE, THE COMEDIC GENIUS DEATHMOBILE OR THE ICONIC BATMOBILE. THIS ONE IS GOING TO GET HEATED! VOTE IN THE COMMENT SECTION BELOW!

  1. The Outsider

Batmobile. Even with the questionable hackery for TV, underneath it’s still a Bill Schmidt and John Najjar-designed concept car (Lincoln Futura) that was hand-built in Italy by Ghia on a Mark II chassis.

Deathmobile? That’s just a pointlessly ruined, mass-produced Continental.

    No contest.

  2. Johnny G.

The batmobile. The deathmobile looks like it was put together with duct tape and cardboard

  3. Matt Cramer

The Futura based Batmobile doesn’t just win this one – it’s probably my favorite of all the Batmobiles.

Flounder, you can’t spend your whole life worrying about your mistakes! You f*ed up… you trusted us! Hey, make the best of it! Maybe we can help.

Turbines are great and all that… but decapitated school founder hood ornament?

  5. Zeke's Garage

I can’t even believe this is a contest. What next, TJ Hooker’s police car VS the Mach 5?

    Batmobile!

  6. Challenger 6 Pac

While the Batmobile is way cool, the Deathmoblie is bad to the bone.
    It’s gotta be the Deathmobile.

  7. 75Duster

The original Batmobile is cool , however I feel that the Deathmobile has attitude.
I vote for Deathmobile, built by Bluto,D-Day and the other frat boys.

  8. Brad Klaassen

Any car that can fetch 4.2 million on the auction block gets my vote! Besides, the crap can of a car from Animal House doesn’t even come close to the caped crusader’s ride in the coolness department.
