Celebrity Car Death Match: The Monkeemobile VS The Munster Koach

Celebrity Car Death Match: The Monkeemobile VS The Munster Koach

So I am writing this after a marathon 15-hour drive home from the ECTA meet in Wilmington, Ohio. The idea came to me as I was watching the sun rise in some state east of the Mississippi. I honestly can’t remember which one. Anyway, we’re pitting two TV icons against one another today and this will be a tough call…I think. Usually when I think stuff like that, there’s a runaway landslide vote. You’ll prove me right or wrong with your votes! Let’s recap Friday’s death match!

[box_dark]On Friday we pitted two cars from the Fast and Furious movie franchise against each other. You sure came out of the woodwork to vote on this!

Result: The fake blown, fake wheelstanding Charger DEFEATS The fake wheelstanding version of Freiburger’s F-Bomb

Looks like the Mopar guys defended their one brand on this one! The Chevy goes down in flames!

Today we’re taking a walk on the weirder side by pitting two of television’s most outlandish and well known cars in the BS Celebrity Car Death Match ring of death! It is Monkeemobile VS Munster Koach time. Hold onto your hats kids!

In this corner sits the most ghoulish hot rod to ever grace the TV screen (we’re calling Dragula a race car-offin), the Munster Koach. Built in the shop of George Barris by Tex Smith and Dick Dean, the Koach was designed by Tom Davis after George Barris was approached by the producers of the famed Munsters TV show. Barris reportedly paid Davis $200 to make up the designs in the 1964-6 time frame. The Koach is powered by a Shelby Cobra spec 289 that was beefed with Jahns pistons, an Isky cam, and then topped with 10 Stromberg carbs. The transmission was a three speed stick. Famously the car drag raced against the Dragula coffin on at least one episode. The vehicle became a staple piece of the show and appeared in several episodes. The body was crafted from three Model Ts and it sat on a completely hand built frame. Interestingly, Fred Gwynne who played Herman Munster was so tall he never drove the car while sitting in the seat. He sat on the floor to drive the damned thing! It must have sounded boss with those open headers, high compression, and big cam!

Over on this side of the squared circle is the famed Monkeemobile which was built by Dean Jeffries in 1966. Based on a Pontiac GTO that was supplied by Jim Wangers of Pontiac, it is one of the most well known and well recognized cars in the world. Originally built with a legit blown Pontiac engine and a chassis setup that allowed it to do wheelies (real ones, not CGI!), it is a pop culture icon and was one of the most popular model cars of all time with nearly 10-million model kits of it sold. Because the car was so hairy to drive, Jeffries was instructed to pull the blower and just stick a carb on the engine. The blower case was retained but there was nothing in it. Many people think that Barris built the Monkeemobile but those people are wrong…wrong…wrong. Barris bought one of the original cars and auctioned it off to the tune of over $360,000.oo! Barris owned the “show car” which was sent around the country for displays and the like. The original TV car was brought to and left in Australia during the filming of an episode. Somehow that car ended up in Puerto Rico, serving as a sort of limo/delivery vehicles. No one knows how it got there but we do know that it was found and brought back to its original luster!

WHO IS IT GOING TO BE? VOTE BY COMMENTING BELOW AND TELL US WHICH WHIMSICAL VEHICLE WOULD WIN THIS VERY SERIOUS DEATH MATCH! THE MONKEES OR THE MUNSTERS?

Of course The Munster Coach. It’s just flat cool. Unlike the GTO that never could beat anything. Even with a blower.

  2. Robert M.

The Monkeemobile because Dean Jeffries built it. And the styling had so much more thought put into it.

Monkee Mobile ….. just because ….. Now if it of been between the Monkee Mobile and Grand Pa Munster’s Draggin Coffin ….. that’d of been a completely different story
